Does media affect society and mass audience?

Image
By Zeinab Hassan  The problem of Media influence on the mass audience has been of interest to many countries for about a century. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the mass media of information transmission finally took shape, the idea of mass manipulation of society became possible. With the advent of the Internet, television and radio, the world has become more informational. Information has become not only the privilege of a minority, but the everyday and necessary content of a wide audience. Thus, the relevance of this topic is obvious, communication has changed, which has new means, and, accordingly, goals. Mass communication, or in other words, Media has become a broadcaster of the entire information environment of society, and it has become the most important and one of the main political instruments in the world. In descending order of effectiveness, the ways of presenting information can perhaps be divided as follows: live - photo - video - audio - printed word. Despi

The Bold Type: A TV series that shows how the media reflects and changes society

Image
Bernarda Vasquez ------ The question of whether media reflect or influence a society is not simple to answer, but it can be summarized with - it depends. This is because, in most cases, the answer includes both variables, but the level of influence of one over the other may change depending on each situation. The relationship between the media, be it news, films, social networks, with society, its culture, beliefs and behaviors - is bidirectional and is affected by several external factors. Following I will address the television program "The bold type" as context to analyze this relationship both on screen and in real life. The American TV series “The Bold Type” is a comedy-drama show that follows the life of three women, who work in a global women's magazine "Scarlet" and their personal struggles, career development and romantic relationships. The main characters are: Jane, a writer, Kat, director of social media and Sutton, an assistant interested in becomi

What is the impact of media on today’s society and how reflect it?

Image
By Said El marda Media has the power to influence individual beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Prior research suggests that media influences through two effects: the individual or direct effect (private) or the social or indirect effect (public). In the individual effect, media information about new norms may persuade individuals to accept them. In the social effect, the information creates common knowledge of a norm and enhances social coordination as individuals more readily accept the information if they believe others have also accepted it. The media can shape our attitudes about a multitude of things from what we buy, the people we admire (and those we don’t), our perceptions of political issues like immigration and health care, to social issues focused on diversity facets such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and age. The media can manipulate, influence, persuade and pressurise society, along with even controlling the world at times in both positive and negative ways; me

Freedom of the media and its impact on society

By:Suhad Kadem Obaid     Mass media is communication -whether written, broadcast, or spoken- that reaches a large audience. This includes television, radio, advertising, movies, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and so forth., which work together to influence the opinion of the general public on a large scale. There are many fields that media channels target to cover, such as education, entertainment, news, information sources, and the transmission of messages. A historical look at the press and the media According to what is common and historian, the fifteenth century witnessed the launch of the press printing revolution, and the beginning of the printing of newspapers and books in a large way, but without using the concept of journalism and media, which began to work in the early twentieth century, and in a contemporary way that included audio and visual means as More advanced media that contributed to the provision of entertainment and informational contents thanks to technology

Media reflects society and changes it

Image
By:Zheng Haoyuan(John) What is the media? Marx once said that all phenomenon reflected by the news media are sourced from the realities of material life and social relations.   In other words, if society is a chemical reaction, then the media is the catalyst and the people are the reaction substrate. The power of the media is not in controlling the direction of the reaction, but in changing the speed of the reaction, prompting it to explode or temporarily inhibiting the chemical reaction. Some seemingly powerful media propaganda, what is really powerful is the power behind the media and the social contradictions that originally existed. When resonating with society, the media plays the role of bringing the wind and pushing the wave. Propaganda without a mass base is meaningless. For example, the U.S. immigration issue, both the left and right side of the media are leading public opinion, because the immigration conflict has a social base that resonates with the corresponding g

The role that government should play in mass media

By: He YiPeng (Bruce)     From the point of the situation in China, should the dialectical view of the role of government in the media, in a nutshell, is the media should form a government as the leading flowers, and other mass media, the government plays a dominant role in the media communication, control, maintain the stability of governments and economic development, through the mass media at the same time, actively listen to people's Suggestions, Refute rumors in time and maintain the long-term stability of national cultural environment. , and in the framework of law, at the same time drastically to allow the development of a free press, by the rules of competition in the market, select a group of views and authority of the mass media, on the one hand, can be more free and flexible coverage of the latest events, on the other hand, is also an important complement to the mainstream media, to supervise the mainstream media to form at the same time, To make sure the light of the n

Media, government and people should be a triangle of supervising

Image
By: Nick Cao In the main opinion of western people, government is made up by people, people will make mistake, then government also. Some people call media power as “the fourth power”, this shows that people think government should be supervised by media. But question is, media are also made up by people, then they will also make mistake. When they make mistake, who will supervise them? And the quotation mark of “the fourth power” shows us this is not a true right or power because it is not stable. It is very easy to be influenced, by tough power, by threaten, by money.       So, in my opinion, the government should limit media market in a limited way and accept the supervision from people and media. And media also should accept supervision from people. Sometimes as an average person, it’s not easy for us to investigate the news media posted. But with the development of Internet, self-media has raised. It provide a good way for people to express their opinion and a good way for u

Concentration of media ownership and freedom of expression

Image
by Said EL MARDA   Concentration of media ownership is a threat to media freedom, placing excessive power in the hands of private individuals, corporations, governments or political authorities. Despite the proliferation of websites and social media, power and influence is still concentrated in the hands of the few. Research suggests that more concentrated media ownership also results in a conservative shift in the ideologies being spread. The concentration of media ownership and the corporate conflicts of interest are threatening the truth. The media has a huge amount of power, influencing the way we see the world, especially politically. However, if the media fails to provide us with unbiased information, we cannot make accurate judgements. Do we really want to continue to let massive conglomerates manipulate our thoughts for their profit? The concentrated ownership of media chains is the question of objectivity on the side of the journalists. Since the resident Gods of the media

Analysis of media ownership

Image
By: Liu Yandong(Reggie)   The so-called concentration of media ownership means that most media or media companies are owned by a few media groups or companies, thus forming a harmful and dangerous mass media ownership structure. In the UK, with the disappearance of the traditional boundaries of the media market and the intensification of the pursuit of economies of scale by media owners, the concentration of media ownership is becoming more and more obvious. The merger of Carlton and Glenda, the acquisition of consumer media group by guardian media group, and the acquisition of Blackville by Willy and son... Mergers and acquisitions in the media industry have led to the concentration of media ownership.     There is an obvious debate about the impact of media ownership concentration. The author believes that we should dialectically look at the concentration of media ownership, not only to see that it can play a positive role in some aspects in the short term, but also

The suppression of media freedom stifles any other progress in society?

Image
Kaniyamparambil Issac Jobin The media is a mirror of society, and the state of media freedom is a benchmark, actually the real image of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in one country. Because, the media are the ones who promote, monitor and warn about cases of human rights violations, and also often journalists themselves are victims of human rights violations. It is not without reason that freedom of expression, which also guarantees freedom of the media, is one of the oldest human rights protected by several international declarations and resolutions, but also by the highest legal act of our country – the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina .After World War II, tremendous efforts were made internationally, especially in Europe, to thwart the re-emergence of totalitarian regimes and dictatorships. Such action has resulted in numerous declarations, resolutions, pacts … as well as an extremely complicated and complex system of human rights protection  Theoretically, huma

The Ghost that Controls the News in Latin America

Image
Bernarda Vasquez ------ An essential part of a democratic state is information pluralism. That is why many countries value and promote the diversity of media ownership and plurality in voices, analysis and sources. Each country in Latin America have their own laws to safeguard this principle, but what to do when media ownership transcends Estate's borders, and acquires power at the regional level ? This is the case of the "ghost" and its media empire in Latin America. First of all, it should be clarified that having a communication and media concentration law does not necessarily infringe on freedom of expression, but that certain regulations and quality standards are needed as in any other industry of a country. An example of this are antitrust laws, which aim to prevent anticompetitive behavior in the market and negative effects on consumers, or in this case the audience, through unfair practices or manipulated information. The level of media concentration is usually me

Do we really have freedom of speech !!

By Papiya mondal • Verity perspective : It is important to know in detail about the issue of media integration and its impact on the diversity of information in a particular market. Critics of the merger raise the issue of whether the exclusive or oligopolistic control of the local media market can be fully accountable and reliable in the public interest. But Concentration of Media Ownership is the idea that most Media or Media companies are owned by a small number of Media groups or companies. • Freedom of the press and editorial freedom:  At the local end, journalists often see their stories edited without denial or acknowledgment. One example is the rejection of networks broadcasting from "ads" in favor of anti-war liberal groups such as Movon.org, or the United Church of Christ, like religious groups, regardless of the actual basis. Journalists and their reports may be directly sponsored by the parties who, as the subject matter of their journalism, are directed towards

Who owns our voices?

Image
By Zeinab Hassan  Media ownership concentration is the process in which fewer organizations control increasing media shares. Current research shows increasing levels of consolidation: many media industries are already highly concentrated and dominated by a very small number of firms. Globally, major media conglomerates include ViacomCBS, ATT Inc., Sony Corporation, News Corp, Comcast, The Walt Disney Company, Fox Corporation, Hearst, MGM Holdings Inc., Grupo Globo, etc. As of 2020, the largest media conglomerates in terms of revenue are Comcast, The Walt Disney Company, ATT, and ViacomCBS, according to Forbes. The concentration of media ownership under the control of a few large corporations has been a problem worldwide, especially in relation to the media's ability to influence politics, public discourse, economy, and culture.  Many argue that the concentration of media ownership primarily serves the needs, interests    and agendas of powerful owners of large media companies. The importance of Citizen groups in media organisations.

By Papiya mondal. Increasingly, scholars have come to see the news media as playing a pivotal role in shaping whether social movements are able to bring about broader social change. By drawing attention to movements' issues, claims, and supporters, the news media can shape the public agenda by influencing public opinion, authorities, and elites. Why are some social movement organizations more successful than others at gaining media coverage? Specifically, what organizational, tactical, and issue characteristics enhance media attention? I combine detailed organizational survey data from a representative sample of local news agency in Kolkata (India) with complete news coverage of those organizations in 4 major daily newspapers( "Ajkal", "Anandabazar"," ৩৫৬দিন" , "Sangbad Samachar" in the one week following the survey . My analyses reveal that local news media favor professional and formalized groups that employ routine advocacy tactics, mobi

The contrast of media market share of USA and its influence.

Image
By: Cao Yinfei     In this blog, I want to analysis the market share and influence of USA.          USA.     All traditional paper media is private, such as New York Time, Washington Post. And most of (90%) electronic media is private, like Walter Disney and FOX News. Some of the electronic media is belongs to pubilc, such as NBC. And mojority of electronic media belongs to government, such as Voice of America.     We can see that, just like the market itself, the market need two "hands", one is visible and one is invisible. Also, media market is need a visible hand, or it won't work well.     In the main opinion of western public, the government is composed of people. People will make mistake, so does govenment. So, media need to supervise government. It seems reasonable, but are media composed of people? Yes. So media will make mistake? Yes. And who will supervise media? Emmm.....     So that is the ugly faces of Western journalists. They criticize others from the hig

The media is governed or governed?

Image
By:Suhad Kazem      The media depend on the news, the transmission of information to the public, the formation of dialogues, the continuity of emotions with the issues they raise, and the news they are interested in dealing with. Or trying to reach it, and the effect of the media’s role is to deliver information, news and everything related to it to the public in an abstract and without bias. Establishing different discussions and dialogues with elites in various fields within a specific media space. Television talk shows are a good example of this. If one of our ancient ancestors came to our present life, he would certainly be surprised by the way we judge people. After the thief became a criminal for everyone and drug abuse became a serious matter many young people are being punished by imitating them with the help of the media. It sheds light on a certain aspect of these criminals' lives. In order to arouse admiration or pity in others and in this way or in different ways, the

The Nazification of the American Media—Concentration of Media Ownership in a Capitalist System

Image
By: Zheng Haoyuan(John) The Nazification of the American Media Concentration of Media Ownership in a Capitalist System As of today, April 1, the death toll from the covid-19 epidemic in the United States has exceeded one million, without a lot of media publicity, without a lot of retweets from human rights advocates, without domination of the charts and hot searches, without sympathy and pity. When I saw this number, I was silent for a long time, it was not a "small" number like one million dead, but the death of a living person, which happened a whole million times. At the same time there are a million families, crying in the dark corners. But in the U.S. media and on the Internet, there was putting on a false show of peace and prosperity. The roads and stores are bustling with activity. When asked about the covid-19 epidemic in the U.S., they laugh and say, "It's just a common cold," "It's the elderly who are dying, they're going to die sooner or
