Media reflects society and changes it

 By:Zheng Haoyuan(John)

What is the media? Marx once said that all phenomenon reflected by the news media are sourced from the realities of material life and social relations.

In other words, if society is a chemical reaction, then the media is the catalyst and the people are the reaction substrate.

The power of the media is not in controlling the direction of the reaction, but in changing the speed of the reaction, prompting it to explode or temporarily inhibiting the chemical reaction.

Some seemingly powerful media propaganda, what is really powerful is the power behind the media and the social contradictions that originally existed. When resonating with society, the media plays the role of bringing the wind and pushing the wave. Propaganda without a mass base is meaningless.

For example, the U.S. immigration issue, both the left and right side of the media are leading public opinion, because the immigration conflict has a social base that resonates with the corresponding groups. In turn, without media propaganda, the masses will not react so strongly to the government's policies, and some of Trump's executive orders will not receive unprecedented obstruction.

Advertising is a typical manifestation of media influence. Consumers bought a brand of kidney treasure because they felt they had kidney deficiency, and good advertising was only the inducement. Of course, some potential demand is induced by the media, consumers may not originally feel their kidney deficiency until they see the beauty in the advertisement.

In short, the media reflects social conflict, but the media cannot change social conflict, but the media can accelerate the outbreak of such conflict, or inhibit it.

  1. According to Marx, the relationship between the media and society is like the relationship between superstructure and economic foundation. The economic foundation determines the superstructure, and the superstructure reacts on the economic foundation. In the process of development, the media has a positive or negative impact on the society. This impact may be ahead or behind, but it is fundamentally determined by the society and reflects the social reality.——He YiPeng(Bruce)
