Concentration of media ownership limit

By:He YiPeng(Bruce)2022/4/1 Concentration of Media Ownership is the idea that most Media or Media companies are owned by a small number of Media groups or companies, resulting in a toxic and dangerous mass Media Ownership structure. I think we should look at the problem of concentration of media ownership dialectically, seeing that it can play a positive role in some aspects in the short term, but also recognizing that in the long term, it does harm to social politics, economy and culture. Therefore, we can analyze how concentration of media ownership limits the number of voices in the market from both positive and negative aspects.   Negative: 1. Discriminate . Large media groups often increase self-censorship of their content products to meet the needs of major interest groups. For example, the Media in South Africa have gradually increased their discussions on topics of interest to urban life and consumers, while paying less attention to the poor and farmers, mainly because of t

civic groups require media organisations to play an active role

Author:Zhang Jiahui(Lucas) Civic groups should play a greater role in asking media organisations to help maintain the quality of social and cultural life. Mass media bears a particularly important responsibility in building a harmonious society, which is determined by its nature, status and role. We know that mass media is closely related to all aspects of social life. It is the most important mentor and friend in the daily life of the people, a bridge between the will of the country and society, a link to promote harmony between people and society, and a channel to realise harmony between man and nature. This article only takes China as the object of discussion. Combined with China's socialist system and China's national conditions, it should play a greater role in citizens' groups, and asks media organisations to help maintain social and cultural quality of life.   In January 2007, Dong Liguo, a young man, made a desire to d

Don't Look Up: The Other Side of America

By:Zheng HaoYuan (John) A meteorite the size of a mountain flew in and scientists saw the demise of the human race. Businessmen see profit, politicians see votes, artists and singers see traffic, news people see another topic. The audience saw the sexiest cosmic research workers, saw women interpreting the roaring pop-art (pop-art), they are more concerned about the flow of stars love life, break up and get back together. After all, most people do not understand whether meteorites exist, can not understand the complex mathematical calculations, and therefore do not believe. It was not until the meteorite, in the form of a naked eye, pulled out its tail in the dark that they stopped and looked up to see it. But to their surprise, "look up" became a Tag line, and its antithesis, "don't look up," became the opposite of what people were standing for on the Internet. The result is that the meteorite is finally falling overhead, and Bash Technologies, as the strongest

How social media impacts political views

Image
KANIYAMPARAMBIL ISSAC JOBIN The political landscape has changed quite a bit in the last couple of decades. The internet has played a large role in this transformation. Social media, in particular, is now a serious factor in political campaigns and in the way people think about issues. Candidates and their supporters constantly post their views on Facebook and Twitter. Each party has its own pages, from which it broadcasts propaganda and requests for donations. Let’s look at some of the leading ways that  social media    influences politics today.  One of the ways that social media has transformed politics is the sheer speed at which news, poll results and rumors are shared. Whereas in the pre-internet days, people had to wait for the next newspaper or TV news show to get the latest information, online news is a 24/7 phenomenon. Social media has taken this a step further. While you can access news on many websites at any hour, than they do on serious news or political websites. This mea

Don't look up to Yemen and Syria! just look up to Ukraine!

Image
by: Yara Hasan   Let's start from the very last.. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky just compared the Russia-Ukraine situation to Adam McKay’s 'DON’T LOOK UP'  during a press conference: “Managing the country it’s like your film Don’t Look Up. We are looking up, but we are also looking on the ground & we may lose the economy.” https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/editors-picks/ukraine-volodymyr-zelensky-russia-dont-look-up-v8b5826fc Netflix’s second most watched movie (according to Netflix) “don’t look up” has been used enormously on social media to describe the current situation between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky not the only one. if you type the name of the movie in any platform you will see huge crowds quoting from this movie to explain their opinions. For example, lately Marina Ovsyannikova, who was an employee of Russia's state-run Channel 1, burst onto the live broadcast of the network's most-watched news show on Monday evening, yelling "Stop the

Are you willing to give up your comforts to save the planet?

Image
By Bernarda Vasquez ---- The film "Don't Look Up" released at the end of 2021, is about two scientists who seek to warn the world about a "planet-killer" comet with direct trajectory to Earth, that could destroy it in 6 months. The situation is real and catastrophic, however they do not receive the necessary attention and action from the authorities, media or the general public who prefer to focus on trivial issues. The movie portrays how people care more about political popularity, personal relationships of celebrities or the rating of television programs over a world crisis. To save humanity from extinction, there is a plan to destroy the meteorite, but economic interests as well as technical problems prevent doing so and the planet Earth comes to an end. The subliminal message of Adam McKay, director and producer of the film, is about the climate crisis, and a criticism to the media for not giving it the relevance it deserves, and to society for not acting up

The film was originally announced to be released before the new crown broke out in 2019. Director Adam Mackay said that the purpose of the film is to call attention to the global climate crisis. However, the outbreak of the new crown and Biden's election have made many ironic points in the film dark and multiple.   Perhaps it is because "don't look up" satirizes too many factions and even the public that it has encountered bad reviews in the United States and has a mediocre reputation on foreign scoring websites such as rotten tomatoes.   The plot of the film is that astronomy graduate student Kate found a comet several kilometers in diameter, but her mentor Professor Mindy realized through calculation that the comet would hit the earth in six months and lead to the extinction of species all over the earth.   However, their discovery has only attracted the attention of the scientific community and a very few people. The president of the United States only cares about

Media politics - never looking up

Image
By Zeinab Hassan     The new work of Adam McKay, author of "Vice" and "The Big Short", is not as much fun and comedic, but much more angry.    Graduate student Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) is working on her doctoral thesis when she notices an unknown space object on astronomical instruments. It turns out that a huge comet flies directly to Earth - and if nothing is done, then it will kill all life on the planet with a 99.7% probability. Enlisting the support of NASA, scientists go to meet the president (Meryl Streep), but she is more interested in dealing with political scandals than with a global threat. People simply ignore the news in the press, and when the government nevertheless begins to act, the ideas are, frankly, idiotic.    In recent years, Adam McKay has made films in a very specific way: he took an important but difficult topic for the average viewer - like the financial crisis (The Big Short) or the mechanisms of the White House (Vice) - and explained it

The influence of the media on our lives and its relationship to politics and economics

Image
by Said El marda "Don't Look Up" is about how much of our lives we spend consuming the meaningless noise of media -- news and social media -- and trying to keep up with standards foisted on us by capitalism. Two American astronomers are met with skepticism and indifference from the media and the internet-at-large to their devastating discovery that a humongous comet will hit and decimate Earth, but everyone seems to have other priorities. There may be some current event topics that this film discuss It like capitalism, commercialism, fake news, disdainful politicians, censoring opposition voices, the country's ideological divide, and billionaire space travel wannabes like Elon Musk and Richard Branson. It also highlights what political events and a world pandemic can do to sew dissension and distrust in all directions. The picture mocks itself for what it is, a brutal examination of where we've come to in the twenty first century amid all the distractions to

At least in my opinion, the United States has the courage to satirize domestic realities.

by: Nick Cao   As the biggest and most powerful country in the world, the USA always beenconsidered insurmountable. But as the No.1 of our world. The USA always have the most attention from others countries. But at least in my opinion, the have the courage to satirize themselves.     Talking to agenda-setting, I think in this flim this theory had a good reflect. What is agenda-setting? In my word, agenda-setting is they can't control how do you think about this, but they can control what issue you can see. Just like in 1:42:52 of this movie, you will found that the TV host always make fan of the professor, don't care about how much damage this comet will cause. What this size? It is beautiful? But just don't care about this comet will destroy the earth thought the professor said it well destroy the world.      In this movie, we can find other theory, such as spiral of silence and pseudo-environment.      Talk about spiral of silence, we can see that if people feel that th

Look up and find your star——By He YiPeng(Bruce)

By:He YiPeng(Bruce)     That's where a good movie comes in. The ordinary comedy is a picture in which everything is shown. High comedy is a funhouse mirror, and what you see depends on your interaction with the funhouse mirror. The film's most important metaphor, the earth-destroying comet, some say refers to climate change, others to the Novel Coronavirus. In my view, it refers not to any specific crisis, but to the tearing apart of America itself. It is the social norm to divide left and right, where there are crowds, there are left, middle and right. But when the media whipped up prejudice, arrogance, mistrust, the government is using harvested votes incited anger and fear, and the masses, grew up too much a honeypot americans have lost their parents, the belief in freedom and the courage to defend freedom, or in the information for the cocoon room catalytic bipartisan vote leeks, not only causing unrest in despair, and then become an excuse for both parties mutual

Yes they pretend to care - "don't look up"

                            - By Papiya Mondal The movie review: Don't Look Up Don't Look Up basically means that people only look at their phones these days, and are only willing to believe in what they want. Throughout the movie, people are more concerned of celebrity breakups and drama than some global crisis, which in fact, is what happens in real life.Throughout the movie, people are more concerned of celebrity breakups and drama than some global crisis, which in fact, is what happens in real life. The president cares more about her election status, which is in fact, what some politicians only care about. Some of the satires are so hauntingly real, that it almost feels more like real life than some stupid comedy The final scene where Dr. Mindy eats with his family is almost a stark contrast of the entire film, as it suddenly becomes emotional. They know that they failed. They tried, but no one listened. Everyone was just way too ridiculous, and they die holding hands togethe

Media, politics and business always interact

Image
Author:Zhang Jiahui(Lucas) After watching the film, let ’ s try to analyze the relationship between media, olitics and business. On the one hand, the media can influence the government's agenda. When major events occur at home and abroad, it is the media that gets information in the first time. After processing this information in a short period of time, including editing focusses, adding renderings, etc., it often has a strong visual impact on the public and leadership, and has a huge social impact. In this way, the agenda will disrupt the original plan, prioritise the inclusion of this matter in the agenda, and accelerate the resolution of the problem. The advantage of this role of the media is that when some matters of vital interest to the people cannot be solved through normal channels, the exposure of the media will attract the attention of state organs. On the other hand, the media will monitor government behaviour. In traditional Western democratic theories, the government&

The Mediterranean model changes In Syria

Image
By Zeinab Hassan       In 2004, Hallin and Mancini released a book on The Three Models, which has become the main source of research after the theories that were before.  The researchers analyzed many countries and saw the pattern how media systems in each region developed differently. Therefore, the authors found that political, social and economic conditions, population and cultural features, physical and geographical characteristics have a significant impact on the development of the media in specific countries.  For the first time, a new Mediterranean media model was proposed, which includes my country, Syria.     According to the study, the media systems of the countries of the Middle East are different because their formation is associated with political conflicts that are still ongoing. Also at the present time, the system is associated with political forces that consider the media as a means of ideological mouthpiece and political mobilization.     Media development in Syria ha

Why Ecuador does not fit into the framework of media systems

Image
By Bernarda Vasquez ---------- To understand communication processes around the world, Hallin and Mancini developed a study where they deduced and conceptualized three ideal models of relations between media and politics: the liberal model, the democratic corporatist model and the polarized pluralist model. This conceptual framework was created from the analysis of similarities and differences in the structure of the media systems of 18 Western democracies, which is a very small sample to be applied globally, however, it can be used as a basis to discuss the case of Ecuador.  Since the independence of Ecuador in 1830 and the emergence of the newspaper QuiteƱo Libre, the country has gone through a Liberal Revolution, military dictatorships and different party governments, and until now, there has been a constant struggle for the political power to recognize rights and freedoms. In particular, during authoritarian governments there has been great tension with the press, seeking to silen

Liberty of Chinese Media

Blog-Reggie Liu As the three Models of Media system, I think the past of China media system is Liberal Model. Before 1949, In the magazine era of the Republic of China, Chinese media was the well-known thought communication media in the old society.   At that time, there were many news media that publicized the advanced western ideas and regimes, such as newspapers and magazines, which people read every day at that time. The elite paid more attention to the trend of politics and was keen to talk about similar remarks in newspapers. Especially college students and professors, who use journalism and public viewpoint to publicize the ideas they represent. In that era, Chinese media people strive to change the face of China and their fundamental purpose of public thought was to save the country.   Therefore, the media format at that time was very free and relatively professional, and they had a balance of government. The media just describe the factual behavior of the pol
