Don't look up to Yemen and Syria! just look up to Ukraine!

Netflix’s second most watched movie (according to Netflix) “don’t look up” has been used enormously on social media to describe the current situation between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky not the only one. if you type the name of the movie in any platform you will see huge crowds quoting from this movie to explain their opinions.
For example, lately Marina Ovsyannikova, who was an employee of Russia's state-run Channel 1, burst onto the live broadcast of the network's most-watched news show on Monday evening, yelling "Stop the war!" and holding up a sign that said "They’re lying to you here."Some people who supported her and saw her as a hero plus the west journalists and the Russian opposition saw her as their own Jennifer Lawrence who tried to tell them desperately to look up no matters what.
If we are staying in the Russian-Ukraine conflict, but from another angle where we are talking about what’s happening inside Russia, "Don't Look Up" can be so illustrative especially recently. Elites are flying out of the country. Regular people who understand what's happening are bracing for the worst.
Let’s move to the double standards in media especially in solidarity, people had a big solidarity with the Ukrainian refugees, the western media straight forward expressed that they would take the Ukrainians with a big heart because they are “blondes blue eyed “, not like the refugees from Syria and Iraq and Yemen who are not blondes and "uncivilised". this is exactly how the movie takes aim at media and news channels and how they can be picky even in the most tragical stories. I'm not saying that Ukrainian civilians who ran away from the war don't deserve sympathy, but also Arab and Muslim refugees tried to escape to a better life, they only received hatred and racism in Europe. Syrians are still the largest group of displaced people in the world. a whole generation of Syrian children (2.7 million) are growing up in displacement and cold empty camps. who talks about them? so yeah let's only look to the white man.
In your article, you dealt with the issue of immigration and the difference between foreign immigrants and Muslim Arabs. They did not deal with immigrants as human beings and in need of a safe life, but rather dealt with other accounts unfortunately. Your article is important and includes the human side.
ReplyDeleteyes, althought I don't want to recongnized that different people are divided into high and low, but you can see that truth is this. Even in China there is someone talk this, of course, in a joke way. We should effort to change this situation.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, yes, the media has become selective. And there is a lot of discrimination and racism.

It is indeed very ironic that ninety-eight of the top one hundred Ukrainian tycoons have run away, the other two still not because of their restricted situation.

I believe it works the same if we turn the situation to the European media! Which is trying to hide much more facts to save their politicians. And becoming TOO rude through their content and arguments. Not only preventing people to "look up" but actually blinding them absolutely and isolating them from the other side of the world! (Zeina)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that he uses a lot of humor but actually in this case exactly I felt much more anger that he used the idea of a comet to destroy the whole earth after losing faith in what supposed to be "leaders" and in Media itself that started to be nothing more than just a tool for those politicians and stopped doing it's job a long time ago. Nice spotting of Veganism ! (Zeina)
