Is silence really that golden?
By Galkin Daniil
Multiple pieces of media touched upon the idea of isolation and loneliness, for example, the famous movie "I am Legend" starring Will Smith. Even there, the main hero can't comprehensevely continue his journey without a companion - a dog, which becomes his outlet for relaying his ideas, feelings and fears.
Without communication, we as human beings become stagnant, we can't strive to achieve results. Humanity reached its peak due to ideas of multiple, not just one. For those reasons we have science fairs, internet discussions and, even, media - to relay our ideas, so that our crudely created existence can be polished and can become a much greater experience for future generations.
A world without communication will wither, stop and simply become a shell of what it originally was. We've seen a lot of examples when words, no matter if they are carefully prepared or said on a whim, can inspire a future which is unpredictable, progressive, beautiful. Look no further then the famous speech of Martin Luther King, when he relayed his dream of a world without racism - slowly, but surely, we are getting there. Yes, sometimes silence is golden, but only if what already said is enough.
Now with sentimentals out of the way, let's head out to the second topic: the models of communication and the examples for them.
Rhetorical - example that I already used, the speech of Martin Luther King, where he relayed his opinion, without a real need for an argument and discussion after that.
Semiotic - easy and simple example - the sign language. A wide-known system without any particular difficulties of understanding, that was systemized and edited throughout the years.
Phenomenological - this model implies that different people can have different opinions. For example, if two people from different countries, that spread propaganda or edited information about the current state of the world, meet, they will surely argue about it, both believing their experience to be the correct one.
Cybernetic - for example, a video game developer makes a statement about the state of his game, with screenshots and proof, to assure his customers about the product’s stability and completion.
Sociocultural - this type of communication concludes the view on a particular communication tradition in different cultures - for example, the OK-sign can have different meanings in different countries.
Sociopsychological - a message from a well-respected medical company about the state of manufacturing vaccines to change the opinion of masses after a controversial statement from some other, less credible source.
Critical - a review for a film or other type of media, adding commentaries, personal opinion about the product etc. The receiver can take the criticism to its face value, debate it or ignore it - the choice is his.
I agree with your point.Sometimes silence is not golden, like when we should show our attitude, when we should prove ourselves and express ourselves with words. If we insist that silence is golden, we will miss out on many things, including opportunities that easily pass us by.

Social media has become an integral part of our lives. Boycotting means detaching from what is happening around you, whether it is in your circle of acquaintances, or more broadly in your local community, and outside regional and global boundaries, but sometimes we need a rest and quiet away from the noise of social media. I prefer to live quietly, face to face communication is the best and it is real communication.
ReplyDeleteI like your phrase and point of view that silence is golden as long as enough has been said. However, I believe that it takes much more to achieve true silence, as it is one thing not to say words out loud, but another is to be able to control your expressions and body language so that they do not reflect your thoughts or feelings, as they are a great source of communication. Getting to that level of control is very useful for negotiations, confrontations, interviews, etc. Have you already worked on your poker face? (Bernarda Vasquez)
